Building Active Listening Skills: A Workshop for Men

Practical tools. Real conversations. No lectures—just skills you can actually use.

Have you ever heard something like, “You’re not listening to me,” or “I don’t think you understand what I’m saying,” and walked away feeling confused or frustrated? You thought you were listening… and even trying to help.

For many men, listening naturally comes with a desire to solve the problem. When someone you care about is struggling, your instinct may be to jump in and fix it. That instinct comes from a good place. It’s about caring and wanting to help. But sometimes the other person isn’t looking for a solution; they’re looking to feel understood.

Being told you’re “not listening” when you genuinely feel like you are can be frustrating. It can even leave you wondering what the other person actually needs from you. The truth is that sometimes we can hear the words, but still miss what the person is really trying to communicate.

The good news is that active listening is a skill, and like any skill, it can be learned and practiced. When you develop it, conversations become easier, misunderstandings decrease, and your relationships can grow stronger and more connected.

In this 90-minute interactive workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Listen without interrupting or jumping straight to solutions

  • Understand the difference between fixing a problem and validating someone’s experience

  • Recognize and navigate the “fix-it reflex”

  • Respond in ways that help people feel heard and understood

The workshop includes:

  • Guided practice exercises

  • Small-group discussions

  • Practical tools you can take home and use right away

You’ll leave with clear strategies to practice active listening in everyday life. These skills can improve relationships at home, strengthen friendships, and support you at work. They can also enhance leadership, parenting, and communication with the people who matter most to you.

Listening is one of the most underrated relationship skills. Often, people don’t need advice, they simply need to feel heard.
